ROADS AND STREETS IN OLD DEVONPORT

DEVONPORT HILL

Devonport Hill runs from the Stonehouse Bridge, at the junction with Richmond Walk, up to join Cumberland Road where George Square formerly stood.  It is the main access road from Plymouth through East Stonehouse.

On the left-hand side going up the Hill was the Drake Institute, including the Church of England Soldiers and Sailors' Institute.  Although some Street Directories list other establishments as being on Devonport Hill they were in fact in Cumberland Road, which started at the former main guard.

The horse-bus services and the Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport Tramway Company's service between Devonport and Plymouth ran up and down Devonport Hill.
