LYDFORD STATION (LSWR/SR/BRSR)

INITIAL TRAIN SERVICE, 1874

The initial train service provided at Lidford Station (sic) by the London and South Western Railway Company in October 1874 comprised six arrivals from Okehampton and beyond and five departures.

At 7.45am the first train departed for Bridestowe, Okehampton, Sampford Courtenay, North Tawton, Bow, Yeoford Junction, Crediton, Exeter Queen Street, Yeovil, Salisbury and London Waterloo (arrive 2.27pm).

The first Down train, the 7am from Exeter Queen Street, arrived at Lidford (sic) at 8.39am, where it connected into the 8.56 South Devon Railway train to Mary Tavy, Tavistock, Horrabridge, Bickleigh, Marsh Mills, Mutley and Plymouth Station (Millbay), where it terminated at 10.07am.

At 10.55am the second Up train was due to depart, after the arrival of the 8.45am from Plymouth Station (Millbay) fifty-nine minutes earlier.  This one went through to London Waterloo Station, where is was due to arrive at 6.10pm.

The 7.15am from Yeovil Station was due to arrive at Lidford (sic) at 11.52am.  It was followed at 2.05pm by the 12.12pm from Yeoford Junction, which connected in to the 2.36pm Launceston Branch train for Plymouth (arrive 3.49pm)

In the meantime the 11.08am Great Western train from Plymouth Station (Millbay) had arrived at Lidford Station (sic) at 12.19pm but there was no onward LSWR train until the 2.40pm departure, which was due to arrive at London Waterloo Station at 10.50pm.

The 6.45am train from Waterloo was due at Lidford Station (sic) at 3.28pm, where it terminated.

Next to leave was the 4.50pm to Yeovil, which was followed by the arrival at 5.49pm of the 10.45am from London Waterloo.  This connected with the 6.16pm Launceston Branch train to Plymouth Station (Millbay), where it was due to arrive at 7.29pm.

The final two trains of the day were the 7.20pm departure for Exeter Queen Street and the arrival, hopefully, at 8.20pm of the 2.10pm departure from London Waterloo.  This means that there were two locomotives stabled at Lydford Engine Shed overnight, those off the 5.49pm and 8.20pm arrivals.
