ROYAL DOCKYARD | POLICING THE ROYAL DOCKYARD MINISTRY OF DEFENCE POLICE FORCE Having started out as the Porters, Rounders, Warders and Watchmen of the Royal Dockyard at Plymouth-Dock; been reorganised in to the Dockyard Police Force in 1834; been replaced by the Metropolitan Police Force in 1860; been ousted by the Royal Marine Police Force in 1934; and been yet again reorganised, this time into the Admiralty Constabulary, in 1949; the police who had been guarding the Royal Dockyard found themselves being further reorganised as from Friday October 1st 1971 into the Ministry of Defence Police Force, where they were joined by the men of the Army Department Constabulary and the Air Force Department Constabulary. This followed the amalgamation of the Admiralty, War Office and Air Ministry as the Ministry of Defence, as from Wednesday April 1st 1964. Although the MOD Police have authority to act in all MOD establishments and aboard all HM ships, they can also take action up to 15 miles outside of the Crown Property in any matters relating to that Property. The first woman Police Constable at the Royal Dockyard was appointed in January 1975. | ||
