Built on the site of the former Powder Store, this was one of the last buildings to be erected in the Gun Wharf.  It was probably used to store gun carriages and associated equipment.

Three storeys high, it is built of randon-sized limestone ashlar with granite dressings and a slate roof.  At the eastern end of the roof is a clock and a small bell tower while at the western ends are iron fire escapes on each side of the building.  The eastern end originally faced a parade ground.  The second floor on the northern side, pictures above, had a hoist.  The interior has a fine Imperial double stairway.

The extent of the Colour Loft is not known - was it just the top floor or the top tow floors? - but it would have been used to store flags.

Under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and successive legislation Number 5 Store and Colour Loft has Listed Building Grade 2 status.
