Store Number 4 in Morice Yard contains a hopper and a rainwater head both bearing the date of 1723, when it was built for the Board of Ordnance as part of the Gun Wharf.  It is thus one of the oldest surviving stores in any of the Royal Dockyards.  It is built of brown dunstone rubble with granite dressings and a rendered western end.  The hipped, slated roof has a flat leaded top.  When built it would have been on the edge of a quay which curved around the outer sides.

The building was used for storing gun carriages and equipment, as was Number 8 Store immediately opposite.  Note the nine pedimented dormers in the roof and at each end of the roof.

Under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and succeeding legislation Number 4 Store has Listed Building Grade 2* status.
