With more road traffic entering and leaving the Gun Wharf through its main entrance in Ordnance Street, in the centre of Devonport, it became necessary to construct a more accessible gateway.  This was built at the northern end of the Wharf, with access from the bottom of New Passage Hill, sometime around 1860-1870.

Two massive granite piers topped with stone ball ornaments flank the roadway, with its more modern gates.  Over the roadway is a hexagonal iron lantern supported from the piers by iron scrollwork.  Two separate arched doorways give access for pedestrians.  The gateway is joined to the main wall by a short curved granite wall that includes ten rifle loops for defence purposes.

Under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and succeeding legislation, the North Gate and Dockyard Wall have Listed Building Grade 2 status.
