ROADS AND STREETS IN OLD DEVONPORT HOLDSWORTH STREET Holdsworth Street, in 1914, was a purely residential street, and was built on the main entrance driveway to the Devonport Borough Prison and its central block. The three large properties in Russell Place, between Holdsworth Street and Wake Street, are remnants of the old Prison. Like its neighbour, Wake Street, Holdsworth Street had just one business, Mrs M A Burt, grocer, at number 1. Amongst the other residents recorded in 1914 were two engine drivers, Mr G Maxfield and Mr H Pritchard, and two postmen, Mr A H Riddolls and Mr H A Saunders, who would soon be well placed when the new Postal Sorting Office opened at Pennycomequick. |
